Soda bread is one of Ireland’s treasured foods and is best served fresh with some real Irish butter. There are various types of soda breads around Ireland, wheaten which is usually sweetened and is popular in Ulster. In the South of Ireland wholemeal bread is the preferred choice and is like the wheaten bread but not as sweet. The white soda bread is more traditionally eaten and is made with plain flour and buttermilk.
As a child, my mum occasionally made soda bread, she would leave it out on the window sill to cool, sometimes the birds would come along and try to pick at the bread, but she kept a watchful eye on her baked produce to avoid them eating her wares!
